After years of planning and consultations, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (CKU) railway project officially broke ground in 2026 5. This railway will become the shortest land route connecting China to Central and West Asia. I. Project Overview The CKU railway starts from Kashgar, Xinjiang, China; passes through Kyrgyzstan; and ends in Andijan, Uzbekistan, with a total length of approximately 900 kilometers. Breakdown: - About 200 kilometers within China - About 430 kilometers within Kyrgyzstan - About 270 kilometers within Uzbekistan II. Technical Standards The railway adopts Chinese standard gauge (1435mm), with a design speed of 120 km/h, an annual freight capacity of 5000 million tons, and reserved capacity for passenger service. III. Strategic Significance 1. Significant reduction in logistics time: Compared to existing routes, the transport distance is shortened by about 900 kilometers, saving 7-8 days. 2. Lower transportation costs: Logistics costs are expected to decrease by more than 30%. 3. Enhanced regional connectivity: Establishes a key corridor for the China–Central Asia–West Asia economic belt. IV. Construction Timeline The project has a planned construction period of 5 years and is expected to be completed and operational by 2031. Upon completion, it will integrate with the existing rail network to form a major railway corridor linking China with Central and West Asia.
